Brief History

Directions – On returning to the car continue down the hill on the D48.II sign-posted to Lac Blanc and Orbey. Shortly you will pass the beautiful glacial Lac Blanc on your right. Continue past this through the winding mountain roads until you get to a junction sign-posted to Le Ligne, Col du Wettstein and Munster on the D48.IV. Follow this for about 5km and you will reach the French Military Cemetery.

Historical Notes – This cemetery surrounded by forest is near to the Col du Wettstein from which it takes its name and contains over 2,000 French soldiers who fell during the battles for Wettstein and Le Ligne during the summer of 1915. The unknown remains of 720 of these are contained in an ossuary. There is a small memorial chapel and a rather macabre monument "aux morts du Ligne" depicting a dead or dying French soldier.
