Northern Sector (Fromelles, Aubers Ridge and Loos) – A Photographic Tour
This photographic tour guide outlines how to get to and what to see at some of the key locations in the Northern Sector of the Artois battlefields. It is not meant to be a comprehensive guide of every memorial, cemetery or bunker - I recognise that most people may only have a day or a weekend to explore the area. Instead, this guide details the locations that I consider offer the best combination of historical significance and things to see for the modern battlefield visitor. For a chronological history of where each location fits into the story of the region please click on the corresponding link to "Vimy Ridge and the Artois Battlefields – A Brief History".
To assist the tourist unfamiliar with the area I have included a map for each location. Here's an interactive map, showing all locations:

For the British this region can be described, with some justification, as the "forgotten sector" of the Western Front, the battles fought here during 1915, soon being overshadowed by the Battles of Verdun, the Somme and Arras to the south and Passchendaele to the north. And yet, its lack of familiarity to those interested in touring the battlefields is also its strength. Mostly unremarkable farmland, sweeping vistas of the area remain much as they must have looked to the soldiers who fought here, and sites can be walked and thoughts focused in peace and quiet, away from the legions that flock to Vimy Ridge and the Ypres Salient.
