The Ypres Salient – A Photographic Tour

This photographic tour guide outlines how to get to and what to see at some of the key locations in the Ypres Salient. It is not meant to be a comprehensive guide of every memorial, cemetery or blockhouse - I recognise that most people may only have a day or a weekend to explore the Salient. This guide details the locations that I consider offer the best combination of historical significance and things to see for the modern battlefield visitor.

They are divided into Core Locations and Optional Locations. The Core Locations are recommended for a first-time visitor to the Salient and can comfortably be seen during the course of a two-night stay in Ieper. Optional Locations are designed to be added to or replace Core Locations in the itinerary of a second or third-time visitor. Both Core and Optional Locations are numbered to reflect the most sensible route around the Salient . For a chronological history of where each location fits into the story of the Salient please click on the corresponding link to “The Ypres Salient – A Brief History”.

To assist the tourist unfamiliar with the area I have included a map for each location. Here's an interactive map, showing all locations:

Whilst there are good bus links in this part of Belgium, it would be realistic to assume that the vast majority of British visitors will bring their own transport. The car allows the visitor freedom to explore numerous sites and avoids the unproductive time spent waiting for public transport. If the visitor has a more lengthy stay in mind, then cycling or walking the Salient are options. Walking can offer the visitor the chance to discover parts of the battlefield that might be easily missed in a car. However, from my experience, driving from site to site followed by walking each location is the best way to see as much of the Salient as possible – and I have written my guide accordingly.
