Recommended Places to Stay and Eat in Verdun

Verdun is basically a garrison town but that should not put the visitor off staying here. Unlike places like Aldershot and Colchester in England, "squaddies" are notable by their absence and the beautiful Quai de Londres on the banks of the River Meuse has a number of excellent restaurants with chairs and tables to eat outside during the summer months.

Two particular recommendations are:

Coq Hardi, which is a 3-star hotel and restaurant, on the main fountained avenue which leads down from the Victory Memorial to the river (8, Avenue de la Victoire; tel: +33 (0)3 29 86 36 36; web: www.coq-hardi.com)

L'Estaminet, which is a superb bar serving countless different types of local and Belgian beers. (web: www.brasserie-de-verdun.com/etabli.htm). It is located in the Rue des Rouyers, just around the corner from the Coq Hardi.

There are a few other reasonably priced hotels in town, although they are a bit "hit-and-miss" in terms of quality. An alternative is to stay in one of the many country "Logis" hotels in the Meuse region. These hotels are all independent, but are also members of the Logis organisation and selected as such for the quality of the accommodation and food they offer (see www.logishotels.com).
