The Battlefields of the Somme – Top 5 Locations

If you live in the southeast of England, you may be visiting the Somme as part of a day-trip or a weekend stay in Amiens or Arras. For these visitors I have highlighted five locations, which I believe are "must-sees" for those with limited time. They are:

Location 3 - The Sunken Lane

Scene of some of the most evocative imagery ever shot of men about to enter battle.

Location 4 - Newfoundland Memorial Park

Original 1916 trench lines under the gaze of the Caribou Memorial.

Location 8 - La Boisselle

Lochnagar Crater - the largest mine ever blown on 1st July 1916 and scene of the decimation of the 34th Division.

Location 13 - Delville Wood

Saw nearly two months of bitter fighting, including a heroic defence by the 1st South African Brigade.

Location 18 - The Thiepval Memorial to the Missing

Sir Edwin Luyten's monolithic memorial to the British and Commonwealth Missing of the Somme, 90% of whom fell in the 1916 battle.
