Click and drag to move the map. Use the slider to zoom in/out.

Directions – Carry on the main road (the D58) in the direction of Souchez and when you reach the crossroads in the centre of this busy village take a right onto the D937 signposted to Arras. As the ground rises on leaving the village you’ll notice a memorial on the right. Park in the road to the right just beyond it.

Historical Notes – No account of the 1914/15 fighting around Arras is complete without mention of General Barbot. Credited with saving Arras not once but twice in the First Battle of Artois, his inspiring leadership of the Alpine Division left him never far from the front line – a factor which led him to be mortally wounded in the Second Battle in May 1915. The French, attacking from left to right as you look back down the main road, reached the outskirts of Souchez during the May fighting but it wasn’t until the September 1915 offensive that this heavily fortified village finally fell and new positions were taken up east of the village in the shadow of Hill 119.
