Location 7 – Pozières British Cemetery and Memorial

Click and drag to move the map. Use the slider to zoom in/out.

Directions – Leaving Pozières by the D929 in the direction of Albert, you are travelling down the Pozières ridge back towards the 1st July frontline at the edge of La Boisselle village. On the right in a few minutes is Pozières British Cemetery and Memorial. Although not directly associated with the 1916 Battle of the Somme, this makes for an interesting stop on the way to La Boisselle. Park on the gravel strip in front of the entrance.

Historical Notes – This concentration cemetery contains many dead from the 1916 Battle of the Somme together with a few from the 1918 battles in this area which followed the German Spring Offensive. The Memorial includes the names of over 14,000 British and 300 South African soldiers from the Fourth and Fifth Armies who were killed during this dark period but who have no known grave.

The corps and regiments with the most names here are The Rifle Brigade (over 600 names), Durham Light Infantry (around 600), Machine Gun Corps (over 500), the Manchester Regiment (around 500) and the Royal Horse and Royal Field Artillery with over 400. Amongst the missing of the Manchester Regiment is Lt-Col Wilfrith Elstob, Commanding Officer of the 16th Battalion, which gallantly fought to the last man in defence of Manchester Hill just west of St Quentin in the first days of the German 1918 advance.
